South Australia Opens Nominations for the NIV (National Innovation Visa) Subclass 858
South Australia has officially opened its nomination program for the National Innovation Visa (NIV, subclass 858) — a streamlined permanent residency pathway designed for individuals who have demonstrated exceptional talent and potential in priority sectors. South Australia NIV is designed to attract high performing individuals, including global researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative investors, and emerging leaders, who possess internationally recognised records and exceptional achievements. The National Innovation Visa offers a streamlined pathway to permanent residence and permanent visa status for highly skilled individuals with outstanding eligibility. Both onshore and offshore applicants are eligible to apply, with eligibility criteria focusing on international talent, exceptional benefit to the Australian community, and a proven record of excellence.
Replacing the former Global Talent Visa program, the new National Innovation Visa in South Australia focuses on attracting world-class contributors across five core talent pathways. The National Innovation Visa aims to benefit Australia's future prosperity and the Australian economy by attracting high calibre talent and exceptionally talented migrants from around the world.

What Is the National Innovation Visa?
The National Innovation Visa (NIV) is a one-stage, permanent residency visa that allows nominated individuals with global standing to live and work in Australia. This visa provides a direct pathway to permanent residence and is considered a permanent visa. Nominations may come from a State or Territory Government, like Migration SA or a different nominator in your field of speciality.
The key difference under the new framework is that nomination is mandatory — applicants cannot apply independently. Both onshore and offshore applicants can apply, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
For those who are aligned with South Australia’s innovation and economic development priorities, state nomination is now available under five distinct streams. Applicants must provide accurate personal details and contact details as part of the application process. Employment status, a job offer, and other documents may be required to demonstrate eligibility.
The Five Nomination Pathways Available in South Australia
South Australia is seeking exceptional individuals whose expertise and achievements align with one of the following five talent streams. The program specifically targets high performing individuals, highly skilled individuals, and high calibre talent with exceptional achievements and internationally recognised records, including international talent from diverse fields:
1. Academic and Research
This pathway is for individuals who have made significant academic or research contributions on a global scale. This pathway is ideal for global researchers with exceptional achievements and an internationally recognised record in their field.
You may be eligible if:
You have received a national or international research grant.
You’ve delivered keynote speeches at high-profile global conferences.
You hold intellectual property or patents.
You have a PhD and:
Recent publications in top-ranked journals in your field.
A high h-index relative to your career stage.
A research degree from a top 100 Times Higher Education university.
South Australia is looking for researchers who demonstrate thought leadership and a strong academic influence — especially in areas that align with the state’s innovation priorities.

2. Entrepreneur
This stream supports innovators who plan to launch or grow a high-impact business in South Australia. This stream is open to entrepreneurs, innovative investors, high performing individuals, and emerging leaders who can drive economic growth in South Australia.
You may be eligible if you:

You must also demonstrate:
In-depth knowledge or a proven track record in your field.

There is no minimum investment threshold for this stream.
3. Innovative Investor
For investors with a history of supporting innovation or growing world-class companies, this category offers a nomination route into South Australia’s evolving economy. The pathway is designed for innovative investors and high calibre talent who can make a significant impact on the Australian economy.
You may be eligible if you:
Have supported successful innovation-driven ventures, or
Have led companies through IPOs or large-scale commercial success.
Investment through managed funds may be considered only in exceptional cases, and you must show:
Past investments have delivered significant economic benefits in South Australia.
A clear strategy for future investment in the state.
The following activities are not considered innovative for this stream:
Cafes or restaurants
Franchises
Consulting firms
Retail stores
Labour hire agencies
Real estate or rental management
Purchase of an existing business
Again, no minimum investment amount is required — but strategic value is key.
4. Creative Professional
This category is designed for individuals with outstanding achievements in the creative industries.
You may be eligible if you:
Have received international-level awards or major recognitions, demonstrating exceptional achievements and an internationally recognised record in your creative field.
Can demonstrate significant contributions in fields like:
Music, film, visual arts
Digital content and gaming
Design, architecture, and media
Applicants should have a clear intention to continue their practice in South Australia and contribute to the local creative ecosystem.

5. Other Globally Talented Individual
If your background does not fall neatly into the other four categories, South Australia may still consider you on a case-by-case basis. This stream is designed to attract exceptionally talented migrants, international talent, and emerging leaders from niche or interdisciplinary domains.
You may be eligible if you:
Have global-level achievements or awards in a specialist or emerging field.
Can clearly demonstrate how your skills will benefit South Australia.
This stream provides flexibility for recognising world-class individuals in niche or interdisciplinary domains.
Application Process: How to Be Nominated by South Australia
If you believe you meet the criteria under one of South Australia's five nomination pathways and want to live and work in the state, follow this process to begin your application:
Step 1: Prepare Your Documentation
Before submitting anything, carefully review the nomination criteria to ensure you meet all eligibility requirements. Prepare your Registration of Interest (ROI) application and make sure your personal and contact details are accurate and up-to-date. You may also need supporting documents such as:
Evidence of employment or job offers

Other documents relevant to your chosen stream
Step 2: Submit Your Registration of Interest (ROI)
Lodge your ROI through South Australia’s Skilled & Business Migration portal. This is your formal request to be considered for nomination under the National Innovation Visa.

You can monitor the status of your ROI via your online account. All updates and final outcomes will be posted on your Skilled & Business Migration application page.
Step 5: Nomination and Form 1000
If approved for nomination, you will receive a completed Form 1000 along with a business case letter from Skilled and Business Migration. These documents are essential for your Expression of Interest (EOI) to the Department of Home Affairs.
Step 6: Lodge Your Expression of Interest (EOI)
Using the nomination documents provided, submit your EOI to the Department of Home Affairs under the National Innovation Visa (subclass 858) program.
Step 7: Receive Your Visa Invitation
Should your Expression of Interest prove successful, Home Affairs will extend an invitation for you to proceed with your National Innovation Visa application, opening the pathway to your Australian journey.
Why Choose South Australia?
South Australia is a rising hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, with strong government support, leading universities, and globally connected industries in sectors like clean energy, defence tech, and medical innovation. The National Innovation Visa program is designed to benefit Australia's future prosperity by attracting top talent who can create jobs and deliver exceptional value to the Australian community.
Nominated applicants will be expected to contribute meaningfully to the state’s future by either living, working, researching, or investing in South Australia.
Comparison of the NSW and SA pathways
South Australia and New South Wales are the only states at this stage that have published their nomination criteria. They both offer nomination pathways for the National Innovation Visa (subclass 858), but their definitions of eligible talent differ slightly. South Australia outlines five specific categories: Academic and Research, Entrepreneur, Innovative Investor, Creative Professional, and Other Globally Talented Individual—providing clear criteria within each, such as international awards, commercialisation potential, or recognised intellectual property. New South Wales, on the other hand, supports five broad talent streams: Academic and Researcher, Entrepreneur, Innovative Investor, Creative Professional, and Sports Professional. The key difference lies in the fifth category—South Australia includes a flexible 'Other Globally Talented Individual' stream, allowing for exceptional candidates outside traditional fields, while NSW explicitly includes elite athletes and sports professionals as a standalone pathway.
